Don’t Miss: Nightmares On Wax
Words by Harry Lindsey
On August 11th, the legendary Nightmares On Wax will be bringing his signature brand of sun-drenched, dubbed out selections to Brighton’s North Laines.
The veteran DJ and Warp Records signee Nightmares on Wax will be partnering with a wonderful charity in aid of children in crisis, the Last Night A DJ Saved My Life Foundation, for a night that promises to be a masterclass of musical selections for an amazing cause.
Hailing from Leeds, George Evelyn has constructed something of a musical institution over his nearly 30 year music career. His Nightmares on Wax moniker has become synonymous with Ibiza-tinged soul music and his record label Wax On Records is a buzzing network of creativity. Ahead of his summertime set at Komedia, now’s the perfect time to get to know the force behind Nightmares on Wax and what musical delights you can expect from his set.
Starting out in local breakdance crews and radio stations, Evelyn quickly began to gain momentum as one of the most exciting DJ and musicians emerging from Leeds. When Evelyn first began working under the Nightmares on Wax name, he was broadcasting on CB radio with John Hanlon, delivering an eclectic mix of anything and everything – from hip hop and soul to metal, classical music and much more. Throughout the years, the Nightmares on Wax name has grown and grown, before eventually becoming a beacon for soulful, musical delights.
Having seen many different incarnations over the years, the collective have had a prolific musical career, releasing 7 studio albums, 4 EPs and 1 best-of compilation since forming in 1988. Nightmares on Wax have even been known to tour as a live band, ever since their 1995 album Smoker’s Delight, causing their collective to become much bigger than simply a Leeds-based group of DJs.
Regardless of it’s expansion and different incarnations, at it’s foundation Nightmares on Wax is the positive and unstoppable force of George Evelyn. The mythic, honorary Ibizan is a neverending source of laid back electronic, funk and hip hop vibes – he’s also given us one of the greatest, and most popular, Boiler Room sets of all time, which has racked up an astonishing 5 million+ views. With his dextrous transitions and sophisticated musical tastes, it is the universality of Evelyn’s selections that never fails to bring people together.
On August 11th Nightmares On Wax will be performing a DJ set at Komedia supported by local legends Mr Bongo. As mentioned earlier, the night is partnered with Last Night A DJ Saved my life, a charity whose mission statement is “to create opportunities and fundraising initiatives to enable the dance music industry to make a positive impact in support of children in crisis.” So get down to Komedia, give some money to charity and let the mighty Nightmares on Wax transport you to the sunny shores of Ibiza for one night only.
